Rootlight: the title screen, Hazel in the Waking Glade

A Moon Cartridge metroidvania Free demo

The old forest has rotted. One archer goes down to its Heart.

Hazel has a bow, a nearly empty quiver and a firefly caught in a bark lantern. Along the way she finds arrows that burn, shine, turn into rope, freeze water, push the wind and break stone. Each one opens the forest in its own way.

01 · The story

The Heart fell ill, and the wood fell ill with it.

The Heart of the Forest has been corrupted. Everything that lived beneath the canopy, beasts and spirits alike, turned into monsters: wolves grown over with moss, stags made of loose light, crows that are nothing but shadow.

Hazel is the last Archer of the Edge. She walks into the wood to descend to the Heart and cleanse it. The light comes back little by little: a shrine lit, a new arrow, a gate that opens. Few words, short lines, and the forest telling the rest.

“The forest rotted from within. The Heart fell ill, and the beasts fell ill with it.”
Old Tatu, the peddler of the Edge

02 · The archer

Hazel, the last Archer of the Edge.

Portrait of Hazel

A moss-green hood and cloak lined in amber, a quiver on her back and a pale wooden bow that glows in the colour of the chosen arrow. The firefly in her lantern follows every step through the dark.

The bow is the game

Draw and charge

07 · Those who still live here

Not everyone here is a monster.

Old Tatu

The peddler of the Edge

Sells sap, a bigger flask and the map of the Edge. At night he curls into a ball and sleeps: the shop closes.

“Seeds in your pocket? My shop is poor, but honest.”

Madam Gourd

The healer of the Marsh

Marsh soup, fresh sap and bundles of arrows for whoever is about to face the lagoon.

“Ah, a light hunter! Come, come. The marsh bites, but I mend.”

Elder Firefly

The oldest of the light

Lives in the Caverns and teaches how to use light where it is scarce.

“Light is not a gift down here, it is a choice. Choose where to put yours.”

Echo

A spirit of stone

In the Ruins, it keeps the memory of when the forest still sang, and tells what happened to the Heart.

“...Do you hear me? Few do.”
Not everyone here is a monster.
